Program Description

Montserrat is a place where nature meets spirituality, and dramatic landscapes create the backdrop to one of Catalonia’s most important traditions. During this tour, you will discover both the religious heart of the region and its winemaking heritage, which has delighted wine lovers around the world since the 19th century.

Your visit begins at the Benedictine monastery of Montserrat, built on a narrow rocky ledge high above the valley. It is here that the famous statue of the Black Madonna, known as La Moreneta, has been venerated by pilgrims for centuries. Inside the basilica, you will experience the unique atmosphere of this sanctuary and gain a deeper understanding of its importance to the people of Catalonia. If the daily schedule allows, you may also have the opportunity to listen to the renowned boys’ choir, whose tradition dates back hundreds of years. There will also be time to taste the distinctive Montserrat liqueurs, prepared according to recipes passed down through generations.

Montserrat is not only a spiritual landmark - it is also a paradise for lovers of mountain scenery, hiking trails and extraordinary rock formations that create one of the most recognisable landscapes in Spain.

The next part of the programme takes you to the vineyards of the Penedès region. It was here, in the 19th century, that the first bottle of CAVA was produced - a sparkling wine that has become a symbol of Catalan winemaking tradition. As you explore the historic cellars, you will learn the secrets behind the production of this “Catalan champagne”, from careful grape selection to the traditional bottle fermentation method. A short train ride through the oldest parts of the vineyard will take you back in time and offer insight into how this internationally renowned wine is created.

This day offers a perfect balance - from the peaceful monastery walls and choral music to atmospheric wine cellars and centuries-old regional traditions.

The order of visits and the programme may be subject to change.

A fantastic tour. Kasia, our guide, is knowledgeable and competent. Montserrat is impressive, and a visit to the winery allows us to learn the secrets of cava production.
